PA6 other modifications
PA6 (Polyamide 6, Nylon 6)‑Other Modification Technologies
PA6 (Polyamide 6, Nylon 6) is a widely‑used engineering plastic featuring high strength, high rigidity and good impact resistance, which can satisfy basic mechanical requirements for structural parts. Meanwhile, it delivers outstanding wear resistance as well as excellent resistance to oil and chemical solvents, making it highly suitable for scenarios exposed to fuel and lubricants. Nevertheless, PA6 has inherent drawbacks: high water absorption that causes dimensional change and deteriorated mechanical properties after moisture uptake; limited heat resistance; and brittleness at low temperatures. Other modification methods for PA6 are shown below.
Chemical‑Corrosion‑Resistant Modification
Superior resistance to oil, grease and fuel is a notable merit of PA6, enabling its extensive application in automotive fuel‑system components and under‑hood parts. PA6 is not resistant to strong acids and strong oxidants, yet it exhibits good stability against alkalis, hydrocarbons and ketones. Copolymerization or blending modification can further improve its chemical stability. Chemically‑resistant PA6 is widely adopted for parts exposed to diverse chemical media, such as automotive fuel‑system pipelines, engine hoods, chemical‑plant valves, pump housings and petroleum‑facility components. Its low water‑absorption property helps preserve dimensional stability and chemical resistance.
Medical‑Grade Modification
Medical‑grade modified PA6 adopts formulas complying with biocompatibility standards including ISO 10993 to ensure non‑cytotoxicity, non‑sensitization and non‑irritation. With inherently favourable mechanical and chemical properties, PA6 can meet medical‑device requirements via carefully‑selected raw materials and additives. Medical‑grade PA6 is extensively used for high‑strength, sterilization‑resistant medical products such as surgical‑instrument handles, dental‑device components, medical‑equipment housings, drug‑delivery‑system assemblies and medical trays. Its gamma‑ray sterilization tolerance makes it applicable for single‑use medical devices. In practical service, migration and precipitation of low‑molecular‑weight substances shall be strictly controlled to guarantee safety for human‑body contact.
Food‑Grade Modification
Food‑grade modified PA6 applies formulas compliant with food‑contact material standards such as FDA and EU 10/2011, preventing migration of hazardous substances during food contact. Featuring excellent oil resistance, chemical resistance and low water absorption, PA6 possesses natural advantages for food‑contact applications. Food‑grade PA6 is widely used in transmission components of food‑processing equipment, drinking‑water system parts, gears and bearings for kitchen appliances, sliding elements of food‑packaging machinery and wetted parts of beverage dispensers. Its heat‑resistant performance suits microwave‑oven peripheral parts and dishwasher heat‑resistant components, and dimensional stability keeps precision food containers free from long‑term deformation. PA6 films are also utilized in food packaging by virtue of good barrier and oil‑resistant properties.
